The National School Plant Management Association,
Tandus Group - Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings specialize in manufacturing high-performance carpet tiles and 6 foot roll goods for commercial markets. Collins & Aikman’s total marketing strategy is built around unsurpassed performance, service and environmental commitment. In addition to superior performance, Collins & Aikman flooring systems are noted for superb style and design features. With a solid history of innovation driven by the desire to create and to understand how and why products work better, Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings, Inc., is a company of strength, integrity, quality and service. A leading manufacturer of vinyl-backed commercial floorcovering, Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings was originally part of Collins & Aikman Corp., a major automotive textile producer founded in 1843. After becoming an independent company on February 7, 1997, Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings took the industry lead in creating unique, versatile, and innovative floor covering solutions. Through its environmental innovations and outstanding employee culture, Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings is truly making a difference. As the market leader in six-foot roll carpeting and modular tile, Collins & Aikman offers a full range of exceptional products domestically and internationally to five diverse commercial end use markets: corporate offices, retail stores, government agencies and educational and healthcare facilities. The Dalton, Ga.-based company produces floorcoverings that last up to three times longer than conventional carpeting and remains the first and only manufacturer to make a 100 percent recycled-content vinyl backing, ER3. Known for unsurpassed performance, service and environmental commitment, Collins & Aikman is a company on a different path. In June 1999, Collins & Aikman announced its plan to merge with Monterey Carpets, a California based manufacturer of high-end, award winning designs in broadloom carpet for the corporate, retail store planning, and institutional markets. The combination of these two companies solidly places Collins & Aikman among the top five specified commercial carpet producers in the United States. Striving to differentiate this acquisition from others recently completed in the floorcovering industry, Collins & Aikman and Monterey will not attempt to merge their operations or brands. Operating independently, Collins & Aikman and Monterey will maintain their individual brand identities, employee base, distribution, customer service and sales teams. August 1999 marked Collins & Aikman’s acquisition of Nova Scotia-based Crossley Carpet Mills, continuing the company’s international growth strategy and enabling it to better serve the Canadian market. Crossley will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings and the company will maintain the manufacturing facilities and employee base in Nova Scotia. A primary focus is to continue to support the outstanding distribution system in Canada and the United States that Crossley has established through independent dealers over the last several years. An active citizen of the state of Georgia since 1964, Collins & Aikman has repeatedly been recognized by the state for its progressive workplace culture. The company employs more than 860 associates in its five facilities in Dalton, Ga. Notably, Collins & Aikman Floorcoverings was one of 11 Georgia employers to be honored with the 1997 Success Track Outstanding Employer Award, recognizing employers committed to improving their communities by providing employees and their families with exceptional training and growth opportunities. The company was also celebrated for offering continuing education programs, on-site employee assistance seminars and community service programs. In addition to workplace excellence, the company is also widely recognized in the floorcovering industry for its environmental achievements. Most recently, the company was awarded the Georgia Governor’s Award for Pollution Prevention, the Product of the Year Award from Plant & Engineering Magazine, and the prestigious Innovative New Product Award as "Best of the Best" by the National Recycling Coalition.
